Who is installing YOUR Generator?

In central Virginia, the news has been inundated with reports of improperly installed Generac generators. After hurricane Irene, a multitude of “generator contractors” flooded the scene, proclaiming their knowledge and abilities. As with any emergency or disaster situation, there are those who appear to be there to help those in need, when in reality, they create more problems than those in need bargain for.

The end result is the new media’s reports of improperly installed generators. Generators involve gas and electricity, not a good combination when improperly installed. As a consumer, it is important to know what your needs are and who will be in charge and take responsibility for your safety and installation.

Hale’s Electrical Service, Inc. recommends that you research your contractor and those you are inviting to your home to quote your backup power needs. Several questions you need to be answered; Is this contractor licensed to do this type of work (electrical and/or gas)? Is this contractor free of complaints? You can look up any Virginia licensed contractor at Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation to see their licensing and complaints (if any).  Has this contractor installed systems like this in the past and can they provide references? Do they provide service after the sale? Are they trained and have certified technicians on staff who have trained with the manufacturer or manufacturer’s representative? Are they registered with the Better Business Bureau? Local Chamber of Commerce? What type of services do they provide and are they able to make warranty repairs when you need them?

A very important part of your safety is the final inspection of your installation by your local building inspections office. Did your contractor apply for an electrical and/or gas permit? Have you been given proof of their work passing local inspection? Having a final inspection of your installation by your County / City Building Inspection Department protects you contributes to keeping you safe. Improper installation cases can be minimized when contractors perform work in accordance with Virginia Law and have their installations inspected. Building Inspection Officials are trained in National Electrical Code, Gas Code and National Fire Protection Codes and their inspections are for your safety. Hale’s Electrical Service, Inc. relies on local inspection officials to keep us and our workers safe. A building inspection official’s signature of approval of inspection releases the contractor and ensures your work meets code requirements.

Keeping you safe in your quest for reliable power during emergencies and disasters is our goal. Most of all, we strive to have 100% customer satisfaction!
